This rare, professionally framed image of Benito Mussolini, or Il Duce (The Leader), the fascist Italian dictator during World War II and a set of epaulets is a unique collectors find among the historical images of this period. The title, "Primo Maresciallo Dell'Impero" under the image is translated, "First Marshal of the Empire", which was a military rank established by the Italian Parliament on March 30, 1938. It was created by Mussolini for himself, and created a crisis between himself and the monarchy. For the first time in history of the House of Savoy, the Prime Minister of Italy bore a rank equal with that of the royal house. It was the highest rank in the Italian military (a power typically reserved only to the King) and was vehemently protested by the King, who despite his objections, signed the law creating such a rank when it was found to comply with the provisions of the Albertine Statute, the constitution of the unified Kingdom of Italy.
Following the death of Mussolini in 1945 and King Victor Emmanuel in 1947, the rank was never awarded again. It was formally suppressed December 22, 2008 by the Fourth Berlusconi Cabinet, even though it had already de facto ceased to exist after World War II.
This is clearly a piece of history and something an avid collector of World War II memorabilia would love to add to their collection.
