For sale is a framed mid-20th Century print of a colorful realistic painting by popular Western artist and illustrator Gerard Curtis Delano (1890-1972), depicting a group of Native American Indians -- a man and two women -- riding horses past a rocky cliff in the desert, probably in northern Arizona. Its title is "Navajo," which the artist wrote in pencil in the margin at lower left. He also signed his full name in the print margin at lower right, along with the number '57 (presumably the year of signing, 1957).
According to the artist's biography, "Walking with Beauty: The Art and Life of Gerard Curtis Delano" by Richard Bowman, Delano's original 36" by 46" oil painting of this scene was one of his personal favorites and was never offered for sale during his lifetime. When it was finally put up for an estate sale at the Coeur d'Alene Art Auction, according to Internet information, it had an estimated price of $300,000 to $500,000, but it sold for $1.247 MILLION, a world-record price for this artist!
The print image itself is 10-3/4" high by 13-3/4" wide, still in the original 1950's-era framing and glass, with an outer dimension of 15-1/2" by 18-1/2". You can sometimes find copies of the same print for sale on eBay for as much as $250, but many of them have been remounted with a non-original mat and frame, and most are not autographed by the artist like this one.
NOTE: This price is for home pick-up in the Hanover area. Packing and shipping the print out of town would be extra.
