Plant Health Care Technician

Job description: This position may require the employee to perform all, but not limited to, the tasks listed below. This position is responsible for the daily operations and applications of our turf and insect disease control programs adhering to our quality control measures, training, punctuality and safety. Candidates must also have strong organization skills, ability to complete appropriate paperwork, and possess good leadership and communication skills. The employee will provide quality service that meets or exceeds our customers and management’s expectations. The employee will show attention to detail and effectively communicate with subordinates, peers and his/her supervisor. All employees will possess a friendly, customer service minded attitude and will conduct themselves in a professional manor.

Education and experience: High School diploma or GED and 2 to 4 years related field experience in turf and/or wood, ornamental maintenance involving chemical application. Certified PA applicators license with category 6 and 7 is preferred (or be willing to obtain the necessary certifications and categories while operating as a technician under our current license).

Performance skills and qualifications:

• Ability to lift 50 lbs. plus.
• Available to work a varied schedule (including Saturdays if a day is missed during the normal work week) in sometimes adverse weather conditions.
• Stoop, stand and bend for 10 hours or more a day.
• Must have a valid driver’s license with a good record REQUIRED.
• Drug free work environment.
• Basic understanding of mechanical and equipment maintenance.
• Knowledge of tools, methods, and materials used in general maintenance work.
• Know of techniques and equipment used in the application and use of various control chemicals.

Daily/Weekly tasks:

1. Daily preparation of trucks and equipment

• Report at designated start time to prepare and review the days schedule with the Plant Health Care division manager / owner.
• Select, mix and apply fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, insecticides and fungicides as directed by the Plant Health Care manager / owner(s).
• Load/fill spray tanks, gas cans, tools and any necessary equipment. Ensure equipment is functioning properly and maintained. Secure all equipment.
• Check truck oil, fluids, tire pressure, proper trailer connection, and all lights are in working condition.

2. Perform and manage landscape installation and maintenance tasks on customers property

• Work in conjunction with the Plant Health Care Manager to ensure the work sold is implemented efficiently, effectively and according to the contract specifications and schedules.
• Maintain application log of all treated areas. Set up signage as necessary.
• Effectively communicate with customers regarding schedules and address any questions or concerns with regard to their lawn or landscape. Contact your manager immediately if you aren’t able to knowledgably answer the questions or concerns. Update customer with the status of the work progress and results if requested.
• Report damaged or broken equipment to your immediate manager.
• Ensure/oversee proper safety equipment and Personal Protective Equipment usage and practices.
• Inspect turf, landscape beds, annual beds, and other areas of woody ornamentals and turf for insect damage or presence, disease in plant material, improper soil nutrient content and other forms of turf damage.
• Additionally, may be asked to help perform some or all tasks with associated with spring operations included but not limited to leaf and debris removal, bed edging and mulch installation.
• May occasionally be required to perform some or all tasks of daily grounds maintenance including but not limited to mowing, string trimming, edging, blowing of curbs and sidewalks, trash removal, shrub pruning, seasonal flower installation, leaf removal, landscape planting.

3. End of the day duties.

• Complete all time sheets, spray logs, inventory and report materials used on the job.
• Unload/load equipment and material for the next day, clean out truck/trailer by removing trash, debris, etc. daily. Prepare chemicals or mixes as necessary or directed by your supervisor for the following day.
• Report damaged or broken equipment to your immediate manager.
• Fill truck and equipment with gas in preparation for the next day.
• Review schedule and requirements for the next day.
• Perform daily maintenance of equipment with cleaning, changing air filters, checking fluid levels, etc.
• Wash truck and equipment – weekly or as indicated by your Supervisor.
